A Sneak Peek Inside My Workout Bag (and Inspiration to Create Your Own Mindful Beauty Routine!)
The smell of a great deodorant.
The feeling of a moisturising lip balm on your lips.
The look of your hair as dry shampoo does its work.
There are so many aspects of our beauty routines which we can use as opportunities to practice mindfulness! By appreciating the smells and textures and intentions and looks of the products we use, not only can we bring more mindfulness into our lives, but we can also engage in meaningful self-care.
Here are a few things you can find in my workout bag, which I use regularly in my own, mindful beauty routines!
Regular deodorants used to really irritate my skin and I’m so happy I made the switch to this natural deodorant! I use it morning and night (and after a workout) and it does a great job with helping me feel fresh and clean, without causing any itching or redness, as other deodorants tend to do.
It has a lovely, refreshing smell, which I always take the time to appreciate!
I used to wash my hair every single day. I went through shampoo and conditioner like there was no tomorrow, not to mention the not-so-environmentally-friendly showers. Especially when my hair was almost waist-length and being very naturally thick, it took about half an hour to blow dry and even longer if I wanted to straighten it!
When I discovered dry shampoo, not only did I have a few extra hours each week, my showers became much shorter and I started saving a heap of money on my hair products. So good!
I’ve tried and tested quite a few dry shampoos and the Klorane Dry Shampoo is by far my favourite. It isn’t sickly sweet-smelling like many other dry shampoos out there, it perfectly freshens up my blonde hair so I only have to wash my hair twice a week and it adds great volume to my hair as well! It’s especially useful after a workout to help get rid of the kinks left by hair ties and bobby pins.
I’m a big believer in good skin care and I couldn’t write this piece without recommending a sunscreen. Sun Bum have created a fantastic range of sunscreen products, including this 50+ moisturising sunscreen spray, which I absolutely love. It smells like coconuts and doesn’t look greasy on my skin. I also use it as a primer under makeup when I’m going to be outside by simply spraying it onto my hands and applying it to my face.
Did I mention it’s also hypoallergenic, paraben free and oil/PABA free? Icing on the cake!
Why not join in the awesome skin-care trend by joining Sun Bum on Instagram using their hashtag #showusyourbum (plus, you could even win a $50 gift card to pick up plenty of sunscreen for when Summer rolls around!).
I practice being mindful when applying sunscreen by focusing on my intention behind it- I’m taking care of my skin and, hopefully, helping prevent skin problems in the future.
It’s also a great sunscreen to wear while working out because it’s water-resistant and doesn’t clog pores (awesome news for anyone who, like me, is prone to break outs when their skin can’t breathe properly!).
I first started using this lip shine when I was a teenager working in my local pharmacy and it’s one of my favourite “special occasion” beauty products.
It’s really smooth, natural-looking and long-lasting, plus it works well on its own or applied over the top of other lipsticks for a glossy finish.
You just never know when facial wipes will come in handy! They’re great after a workout (especially if you don’t have time for a shower), they take off make-up easily after a long night and they’re useful hand-cleaners in a cinch.
These Palmer’s wipes are subtle-smelling, gentle on my sensitive skin and they work really well (even removing water-proof mascara and stubborn lipstick!).
To use these wipes in a mindful and self-caring way, give yourself a massage at the same time. Gently rub the wipes in small circles over your skin and simply enjoy the sensation.
I never used to bother using make-up brushes, but over the last few years, they’ve become a firm favourite in my beauty routines. They are such wonderful mindfulness tools, mostly because of the beautiful massaging sensations I can enjoy as I use them! However, it can also be very mindful to watch the colours of the makeup blending into my skin and the simple act of washing them after use.
My final favourite workout product is the Nude by Nature Illuminator (applied with the Real Techniques brush above). As someone who gets red skin instead of sweating, I love this product because it dulls that redness and adds a soft shine to my skin. I only need to use a little bit and I feel more confident going out for coffee post-yoga!
This illuminator is another “special occasions” favourite, because it mixes well with my foundation to create that lovely, dewy look.
When choosing beauty products, I also like to be mindful- is this product something I will genuinely use? Is it cruelty-free? How am I feeling about this purchase?
Practicing mindfulness in this way is important in my daily life to help me stick to budgets and maintain a minimal approach with what I own, but also to help me add meaning to my life in new, fun and interesting ways!
