The Aware App: About the App and My Growth Mindset Masterclass
I never used to enjoy meditation.
When I first learned about mindfulness, I incorporated it into everyday activities (such as cooking and showering) as much as I could. If I was feeling overwhelmed or stressed out, then I often used a breathing technique for a few minutes to calm myself down. I enjoyed informal meditation; going for mindful walks, doing yin yoga and mindful colouring.
But when it came to actually sitting down for even 5 minutes of meditation? Nope. I could barely sit still for a minute or two.
Almost straight away, my mind would start racing. My back began to ache almost as soon as I sat down on the floor with my legs crossed. Then I’d remember something important I had to do and struggle more and more to maintain my focus on the meditation.
I usually gave up pretty quickly because it was just too uncomfortable (both physically and mentally).
I started using meditation apps because I needed help and guidance to create a formal meditation practice. The more I tried different meditations, the more I felt curious about learning as much as I could about it! I was looking forward to my meditation sessions, I often felt calmer afterwards and I tended to have my best creative ideas during meditations. The minutes used to drag by during my meditations, but I began feeling more and more comfortable with them.
I completed an Advanced Certificate in Guiding and Teaching Meditation, which definitely helped me further my own meditation practice, too.
Last year, I heard about the Aware App and decided to give it a try. I really enjoyed the variety of different meditations and I loved the voice of the main guide!
There were also some really cool features which really resonated with me – especially the “Breathe” section (found under “Tools”). You can choose a level; beginner, intermediate, or expert. Then, you can select how long you would like to do the breathing technique for. As you do the breathing technique, you can see two lines moving slowly up and down your screen to help you stay on time with your breaths.
When I’m feeling tired in the afternoon, I love using the “Stay Motivated” meditation for ten minutes. If I’d like to feel more present and grounded, I use the Breath and Sound Awareness. Basically, there are heaps of different (and specific) meditation tracks to choose from – and courses AND masterclasses! I’m still finding new things to explore.
With a 4.7 out of 5-star rating on Google Play and Apple, Aware is one of the highest rated meditation apps available.
Here are a few things helpful things to know…
What is the Foundation Course?
The foundation course is a 21-day course which gives you a great introduction to mindfulness techniques and creating a consistent meditation practice. You have to complete the Foundation Course before you can access the other courses.
What are Singles?
Singles are specific meditation tracks on topics like sleep, walking, cooking, mindful eating and self-confidence.
I actually created and recorded three Singles which are now available on the Aware App; abundance, grief and relaxation.
What are Masterclasses?
Now, this part is especially exciting. The Aware App collaborates with a number of meditation teachers from around the world to create awesome Masterclasses. As of January 2019, there are three Masterclasses available; Mindful Living by Jyothi Shyamsunder, Difficult Emotions by Publio Valle and Growth Mindset by me!
In my Masterclass, I guide you through 21 days of meditation, designed to help you cultivate a growth mindset. When you have a growth mindset, you focus on growing your skills and learning – you know you don’t need to be great at something straight away. Someone with a growth mindset is more likely to be resilient in the face of obstacles because they believe in their ability to improve.
I’ve been cultivating my own growth mindset for years and this is something I’m really excited to be sharing exclusively on the Aware App!
How much does it cost?
The Aware App can be downloaded for free and you’ll receive access to the first 7 days of the Foundation Course, various tools (like the Breathe section) and the “Waking Up” and “Sleeping” Singles. To listen to all the meditations, it will cost $3.99 per month, $29.99 per year or $74.99 for lifetime access. You can sign up here and use the code AWARE50 for 50% off your first purchase! There is so much amazing content you receive access to and the Aware App is growing all the time.
I believe the Aware App is an incredible resource for people wanting to incorporate mindfulness and meditation into their lives on a regular basis. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of meditation, be sure to check out episode 149 of my podcast, The Mindful Kind.
